Abstract

This paper distinguishes first of all between Islam as a system of value?transcendental Islam that is?and Islam as socio-cultural phenomenon?sociological Islam that is. The former is about religion as a given system of belief, while the latter is about religious way of life. While touching briefly on the former, the paper will focus a great deal on the latter. It will focus as such on the ?constructed Islam? by the Javanese Muslim santris. Employing the social constructive theory, the paper assumes that these santris are active agents in building their own religiosity through what may be called a dialectical moment. Hence, the paper refuses the commonly believed understanding that social facts are completely outside individual awareness in the process of religious construction. By this, the paper attempts to show that Javanese Islam?sociologically speaking?is none other than the product of santri?s cultural and social upbringing.

Abstract

The subject of this paper is the orthodox nature of KH Shalih Darat?s Sufism. He is an Indonesian Muslim thinker of the 19th century. The paper argues that the man is behind the dissemination of not only Islam but also of Sufism on the Javanese island. Despite his high standing knowledge and piety however, the man is not yet known especially in the academic circle in Indonesia. It is this reason that the paper is interested in exploring his ideas and intellectual biography. The paper tries to show that Muslim community during his lifetime was polarized into the elites and the laymen. K.H. Shalih Darat targeted the latter while not forgetting the former. But the most striking question would be how does his orthodox religiosity fit into the laymen and work for the elites? The paper will try to answer this question by emphasizing first that for the man, orthodoxy is a must for people of the Javanese outlook. And second, it will try show that while orthodoxy and heterodoxy are always at odds with one another, the tension between the two does bring a good implication for the course of dakwah on the island.

Abstract

This paper examines the notion of state and leadership according to the contemporary Islamic thought. To be more precise, the paper asks whether it is possible for a non-Muslim to be the president of the majority Muslim country. To answer this, the paper will dwell into the problem of citizenship both in classical and modern Islamic thought by taking into account the political and social situation that shapes this thought. The paper maintains that many Muslims?both in the past and at the present?fail to offer a proper discourse on statehood and leadership in Islamic perspective. The mainstream discourse on this issue?the paper argues?is that which keeps in a good balance the notion of religiosity and citizenship. The rightwing Muslims will provide a textual understanding of the problem, while the left-wing will otherwise offer a secular interpretation of it. This paper will try to keep the two in a balance, and present a fair understanding of what the Qur'an and the Sunnah say about the problem at hand.

Abstract

Many contemporary Muslim scholars argue that Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) is not ready to face the demands of the modern era. Modernity is so powerful that it weakens the foundation of fiqh on the one hand, and opens up new opportunities that cannot be reached by fiqh on the other. The method that fiqh has introduced is in itself incapable of adapting to new situation and also incapable of addressing new issues such as the issue of human right, constitusionalism, and the like. It is in this context that contemporary Muslim scholars speak out for reform in the methodology of fiqh as well the application of this methodology in addressing new issues. This paper is concerned with discussing this problem by referring to the thought of some leading authority in this regard such as Abdullahi Ahmed an-Naim, Aboe el-Fadl, and Nasr Hamid Abū Zayd. The paper argues that for these scholars, fiqh has lost its role and power in the modern society because of its discriminative trait. Fiqh must therefore deal with this negative image if it is to restore its influence in the modern civilization.

Abstract

There are two conceptual terms that this paper will try to expose. The first is analogy (qiyās) and the second is istiḥsān, an analogy?like method of extrapolating jurisprudential rules. The paper will try to speak of their relationship in the light of al-Sarakhsī's rationality. In the field of Islamic jurisprudence, the two concepts are often seen as contradicting to one another. The Shafiite jurists are even of belief that using istiḥsān is legally forbidden for that would contradict the general rules of Islamic law. The paper assumes that despite general view of the jurists that istiḥsān is an equivocal method it can nonetheless be fitted into qiyâs. To show that however, the paper would inevitably re-define both qiyās and istiḥsān as proposed by al-Sarakhs?. By exploiting the ideas of al-al-Sarakhsī, the paper hopes that new lights may be shed as far as the richness of Islamic method in jurisprudence is concerned.

Abstract

Corruption has become a kind of endemic in a country like Indonesia. It becomes our serious challenge therefore to deal with it properly and appropriately. This paper argues first and foremost that combating corruption through law enforcement is not enough. It proposes instead, that preventing corruption can only be effective and affective through education. By education we mean that which sharpens and softens the mindset, attitudes, and behavior of the educated. Our schools have hitherto been focusing on the cognitive aspect of education only ignoring in that process its spiritual and affective aspects. What is needed?this paper further argues?is value inculcation in the mind and heart of the students in such a way that when they grow up they can look after themselves as far as avoiding vices is concerned. Value inculcation in turn can only work when a religious education and instruction is involved. Hence, good education is what which incorporates religious teaching and doctrine into the system of education. It is to this point that this paper is destined.

Abstract

This study discusses the concept of multiculturalism according to the santris and its relation to their religiosity. Santris are those who study at the pesantren, the indigenous form of education in Indonesia. The paper offers a descriptive elaboration of what these santris think of multiculturalism and how they relate it to their belief and religious tradition. It argues that multiculturalism has been the very character of the pesantren in which santris of various cultural background stay to study. How thismulticulturalism works and how it influences the santris in the way they look at the idea of nation-hood is the question that needs to be explored. And this paper aims at doing just that. Nation-hood is just another form of multiculturalism. While the santris are used to a life of a multicultural nature, the question of how they adapt to the national culture on the one hand, and how religion shapes the way they behave on the other becomes of particular interest. This paper will show that religion and nationalism are two sides of the same coin?as it were?in the life of the santris.

Abstract

The history of Muslims in different part of the world has shown that the religion of Islam is disseminated through various form of dakwah ranging from music, rites, and even dance. The medium of dakwah has always changed depending on the nature and character of the society in which Islam is propagated. In Indonesia for example, the Javanese music called Gamelan was used by the Nine-saints to carry out their dakwah activities. This paper tries to discuss this. It is aimed at answering the question of what is the extent to which the medium of dakwah is being used in a particular propagation activity, and what would be the implication on the dissemination of Islam in using this medium. The paper is particularly interested in investigating what it calls the cyberdakwah, namely dakwah by means of modern technology such as the internet and the like. It asks, what are the positive and negative implications of this way of dakwah for Islam and community at large? As the paper tries to come up with the answer for the question, it keeps in mind the fact that the cyberdakwah reflects the adaptive ability of the Muslims in carrying out their dakwah activities.

Abstract

The role and contribution of Islam as a religion in the process of education in this country is both clear and remarkable. The contribution is so significant that many have believed that the Islamic system of education in the country has become what can be called a sub-culture within the national system of education. This paper tries to expose this in the context of the goal, the development and the core of education in Islam. The paper argues that the Islamic system of education is based on the vision of the Qur`an concerning man, his knowledge and attitude. For Islam, education is about sharpening man?s mind and softening his heart. It is this premise that underlines the whole argument of the paper. The paper further shows that this vision is in a total line with the objectives and goals of our national education. The paper then speaks of what it calls the ?new nationalistic form of Islamic education? in which the religious and national values are integrated. This new model of education is not only idealistic but also transformative and innovative in the context of Indonesia and is relevant vis-?-vis the demands of modernity.

Abstract

Pesantren has been believed to be a form of indigenous educational system in Indonesia. The history and nature of pesantren have both shown that there is a good relation between pesantren and the society. This will be the focus of the study. It would investigate the notion of how pesantren is related to the wider community, and what are its strategies to keep the community in touch with it? All this will be discussed with referring particularly to the case of pesantren Sidogiri and its already-existing unit called public relation unit. Qualitative in its nature, the paper is phenomenological in its approach. It assumes that generally speaking, any pesantren in Indonesia would ?in the beginning- run by accident, and not by design. But as it grows, it becomes as modern as any advanced educational institution would be. Hence, the paper will show that pesantren Sidogiri is aware of the importance of imagebuilding, and that it consciously pursues it through its software and hardware mechanism. The paper will also show that the surrounding community and the alumni are in fact part of the pesantren?s network to build a better image.
